Evoking The Weird

The city hold many mysteries, and for the mundane folks, any strange occurrences tend to be washed over with an equally mundane veneer. The shroud ensures that Drabs don't see the Spark world. This is not to say there aren't times when they do see it, because there are plenty, its just that, even then, after the incident has gone, they forget, and their mind creates a rational explanation. The times when they do see the Spark world, is referred to as 'Evoking The Weird'. This is when something occurs that even The Shroud would have trouble covering up. When these displays occur, The Shroud is lifted, not just for the effect, but in the whole area. This can be dangerous as Drabs tend to react with fear.

Because The Shroud is lifted, every Spark in the vicinity is seen for how they truly look, and augmentations are visible. This can lead to Drabs attacking them, fearing they are some kind of machine. Also, coppers or gangsters could end up shooting at the offending effect.

Once the scene clears, all Drabs return to a state of normality, hazed over by the return of The Shroud. If questioned about the incident they will remember something completely mundane. A dragon flipping cars as it charges down the road, heading for its target, who'll have all onlookers screaming, some may flee, others may throw things or shoot at it. However once it disappears around the corner, The Shroud washes over them, and if questioned about the incident they would come up with a mundane answer, like a large truck power down the middles of the road, knocking the cars out of its path.

Sparks try to avoid Evoking the Weird unless necessary due to the sheer unpredictability of Drabs. Another reason for this, is that every so often this can not only awaken a dormant Spark, but can also awaken a Dud. Duds, as their name suggests, are mundanes who, after experiencing The Weird being evoked, never return to normal. The Shroud for these people has been lifted for good, however they are not Sparks, and as such can not create things for themselves.

Duds can be dangerous, envying Sparks for what they have, they often try and take their devices or artefacts for use to forward their agendas among the mundane. Opportunists seeking to gain power, status and money, they would kill any unsuspecting Spark to get what they want.

In an ever changing, ever moving, ever mysterious city, Sparks have to tread lightly, or suffer the consequences.
